What Are Sight Words?

Sight words are high-frequency words that children often see in reading and use in writing. These words usually don’t follow regular phonics rules, which makes them difficult or even impossible to sound out. Instead, children are encouraged to recognize them by sight. Learning sight words helps young readers build fluency and confidence as they begin to read more smoothly and understand text more easily.

What’s the Difference Between Sight Words and Phonics?

Phonics is a method of teaching children to read by learning how letters and combinations of letters represent sounds. It helps students "sound out" new words using rules and patterns.

Sight words, on the other hand, are words that often break those rules. They don’t always follow phonetic patterns, so children can’t easily sound them out. That’s why sight words are taught through repetition and memorization.

Both sight words and phonics are essential for building strong reading skills. Phonics provides the foundation for decoding most words, while sight word recognition allows children to read more smoothly and confidently by instantly recognizing common, tricky words.

Together, they create a well rounded approach to early literacy success!
